Why We Started Crate Culture Co.

I’ve been asked a lot why I started Crate Culture Co., and the honest answer is that it comes from a few things I’ve cared about for a long time.

First, I’ve always loved wearing cool, obscure t-shirts. The kind that only the people in the know really understand. For me, a great shirt has to do more than look good. It has to feel good, hold up over time, and become something you actually want to live in.

Second, I’ve always loved record stores. Every one has its own personality, its own energy, and its own cast of characters. I love digging through crates, finding a great record at a great price, and feeling that quiet sense of calm the second I walk through the door.

Third, I’m deeply into music in every form. National acts, local bands, vinyl, CDs — I love all of it. I’m constantly listening, reading, or learning more about music, and Crate Culture Co. became another way to stay close to something that’s always been part of my life.

And finally, I’ve always wanted to build something of my own. After more than a decade in ad-tech, I knew I wanted to create something I was genuinely passionate about. I never wanted to start a business just to start one. If someone else had already built Crate Culture Co., I would have signed up as a subscriber in a heartbeat.

Crate Culture Co. is my love letter to independent record stores. The places, the people, and the music. The tee shirt and sticker are the souvenir, but the real heart of the project is sharing the incredible stories behind record stores around the world and building a community around them.
